Mayser Center, Franklin and Marshall College, Lancaster, PA

Built in 1961, the complex has seen its share of history.  21 conference championships have been earned inside of its walls, while 50 athletes have been labeled All-Americans on its courts.

Charles W. Mayser was an American football and baseball and wrestling coach. He served three stints as the head football coach at Franklin & Marshall College (1913–1914, 1924–1925, 1944–1945) and was the head football coach at Iowa State University from 1915 to 1919.

Charles Mayser, sometimes called “Uncle Charlie,” started wrestling as a varsity sport at F&M back in the 1920’s. Mr. Mayser is an interesting, legendary wrestling figure, and one of the old EIWA wrestling folks who warrants our respect and admiration. In 1918 Mr. Mayser became chairman of a national rules committee, which published the first college wrestling rules in 1922. He returned to the Keystone State in 1923 and soon thereafter started wrestling as a varsity sport at F&M, where he also was football coach and athletic director. Charles Mayser’s 20-year wrestling coaching record was 145-19-4. Mayser also coached the Cross Country team from 1924-1947. He had a 56-9 record. Amazing accomplishments.

On March 10, 1972, the Ike & Tina Turner Review electrified the stage at Mayser Center as part of the spring Student Union Board (SUB) Concert Series.
Tina and her backup singers, the Ikettes, thrilled the audience with their upbeat rendition of “Proud Mary” and poignant delivery of “Come Together.” Other acts to grace the Mayser Center stage that spring included Badfinger; the Beach Boys; Emerson, Lake & Palmer (ELP); and the New Riders of the Purple Sage.
